The phenomenon of electoral alienation has occupied a secondary role in the studies of electoral behavior. Very often, when electoral alienation emerges, it comes as part of a broader research agenda. Therefore, this article aimed to review the contribution of previous studies about this thematic in Brazilian and compared their results to analyze this phenomenon in the 2002 presidential elections. Our results showed a complexity in terms of the causalities of the phenomenon to some extent, the statistical analysis corroborated some of the main explanations – however they differed on some points.
