This paper presents the evolution of Marxist ideology in Peru, taking into account the fact that Peru is both a non- European and peripheral country. In consequence, the topic is to analyze the reception of a definite Eurocentric ideology in a different context at the beginning of the century. The main reference is Jose Carlos Mariategui, the well know Peruvian thinker, often considered the first Marxist in Latin America as well as one of the most imaginative interpreter of that ideology. This paper also includes an assessment of the “indigenism” and its impact on Peruvian political thought. The concluding part includes some comments regarding the last decades of Peruvian political life, particularly the most conflictive period during the 80 ?s.
