In a national context characterized by the opening of the political regime (started in 2000) and the increase of social protests, this essay proposes to analyze the consequences of political conflicts on the (de)democratization process at the regional level in Peru. At the same time, it outlines some theoretical and methodological insides for the analysis of contentious politics. This paper is based on an extensive literature review (not limited to the Peruvian case) excessively based on the causes and development of social conflicts, rather than on their consequences on democracy at the national and regional levels.
